The 2,004-acre Mokalbari Tea Estate was established in 1876. Its name comes from the word ‘bari’ which means a specific location, and ‘Mokal’ refers to the tall, thick-stemmed bamboos that used to grow there. The planter who first developed the tea garden recognised that the rich sandy loam soil that was doing wonders for the bamboo would also be good for tea, so he uprooted the Mokal trees and planted tea instead!
